If you are an amateur photographer, then it’s quite likely that you won’t be aware of a number of lighting techniques and must be getting stuck in quite a lot of tricky situations. Now let’s consider this situation, if you have called for a subject for a photo shoot to your studio. The subject has a dark complexion and is wearing a white shirt. Now to while clicking the picture, you realize that if you increase the aperture to give proper exposure to the face, their clothes which are already white coloured start burning or get over exposed.
If you put an extra light on the face, then it spills on the white clothes also and makes the white burn again. Now this is where clothes light come handy. All you need to do is put separate lights on the face and on the clothes. Most basic digital cameras, like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5, already include face detection features for addressing the face, so it is usually more important to focus on the clothes. Put a subtle light on the clothes and then open the aperture in a way that the face looks pleasant, so when you press the shutter, there will not be a striking contrast in between the clothes and the skin complexion.
If you see the image above, the subjects have a dark complexion and they are wearing white clothes which make them look even darker. Now in such a scenario clothes light comes handy. A separate light on the white clothes and separate on the face which helps you balance the contrast and get a pleasant family picture. Clothes light can also be used in an opposite situation when the subject is very fair and is wearing dark clothes.
