Lighting for photography is a very wide subject and one needs to study it a lot to get it right.
In general there are two kinds of lighting- indoor and outdoor. Outdoor lighting mainly consists of using the natural light of sun, but the tricky part is to do lighting indoors and yet not look artificial. In the case of indoor photography there are many more varieties of lighting techniques. Often it even becomes necessary to use umbrellas, like the Hama 6071, too reflect light correctly on the photo subject. One of the most common lighting techniques for indoor photography is known as three point lighting. As the name suggests, three point lighting consists of 3 different kinds of lights being thrown on a subject from three different points.
You can see the image on the left. This is three point lighting which throws light from three different directions, thus giving the car a three dimensional look.
The right kind of lighting can make your subject look dramatic, three dimensional and even help you bring out its texture. The right kind of lighting can make some of the ugliest things look glamorous. Other kinds of lightings are based on the contrast ratios that are achieved through those lighting. Some of them are High Key lighting, Low Key lighting, Chiaroscuro and silhouette. The right use of lighting can bring out the emotion and drama in your image.
