We have already discussed and defined what kind of field fashion photography is. For amateurs just knowing what fashion photography comprises is not enough, they still need to know the right techniques and the basics of fashion photography. Most of the techniques are learned through experience, but here are a few basic tips for photographers dreaming of entering this glamorous profession.
The very first requirement for fashion photography is that the person behind the camera needs to have a lot of patience. It will often take you up to 4 hours to set up a single frame.
Secondly you need to have a subject, which could be a product, face or clothes. After picking a subject you need to decide a location or a setting for that subject. Fashion photography is generally done indoors due to the extensive lighting that it requires but some photographers also feel that real beauty of frames comes out in natural surroundings. The choice of location depends the feel and mood of the product. If you see the image above, this has been taken in natural surroundings mainly because the look and feel of the garment is very pure and serene which connects with nature and wouldn’t have looked this great in studio lighting. On the other hand if you see the image on your right, the image has been taken in a studio with low key lighting. Often most casual wear is clicked in natural surroundings and part wear is clicked in studio to give a glamorous appeal to it through artificial lighting.
Third important tip for fashion photography is that when you are shooting indoors; use a wide angle lens, such as the Nikon AF 24mm 2.8 D lens, since it has greater depth of field and allows you to connect with your subject more easily.
